My name is Gabriella Carrero, I am a citizen designer born and raised in Florida. I am studying graphic design at FIU. I have been a part of the DesignIsChange.org program working with the nonprofit organization called Dreamcatchers for the Soul, in order to create and donate 5 posters dedicated to their motive. I usually enjoy creating digital illustrations, but I have also been working on my painting skills. I chose to illustrate a trash can character for my stencil.
I wanted to create a playful design that could convey both a fun and serious message to people walking by. I included the text “FEED ME, KEEP CLEAN” and this is meant to be seen as dialogue from the trash can character to help further convey my idea of keeping trash in its rightful place and away from the storm drains. I chose to give it an angry expression and fists to not only keep the cartoonish style, but also to represent the urgency of the chosen topic. The text is a simplistic sans serif font that wraps around the character and keeps the viewer's eye moving from top to bottom, that way they are able to fully analyze the stencil.
