I am Julia Cartaya, a digital artist and graphic designer based in Miami.
In collaboration with the City of Miami, I’ve created a storm drain stencil to raise awareness about human waste and trash within Florida’s waterways. My design’s message “Dumping plastic leaves drastic shores” aims to target the direct issue of pollution itself. My design incorporates a metaphor of a bomb to explain the idea that polluting the environment will create disastrous effects on the drains leading to larger bodies of water.
To enforce this concept I have created a plastic bottle in the form of an explosive device, which is meant to give the viewer the impression of the possibility of destruction if waste were to be dumped into water reservoirs. The statement, “Dumping plastic, leaves drastic shores” is meant to entice the viewer through the use of this metaphor. This design, combined with the bold typography, will have the aim to deter the viewer from leaving recyclable materials in and/or near the storm drain itself.
